Recognition of Qualifications in Statutory Schools
ATTENTION: German language proficiency at the C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language Skills is a prerequisite for attaining a teaching position in statutory schools.
RECOGNITION OF TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS IN STATUTORY SCHOOLS:
Do you have a degree from a study program for statutory level education from a member state of the European Union? Your qualification can be recognized by the Styrian Board of Education (Section Präs/4 – Personnel Federal and State Schools).
If you wish to begin the process of recognition of qualifications, please use the following form: https://fsw.amtsweg.gv.at/formularserver/user/formular.aspx?pid=a92be64cc3154d1ba07b86e019d945c3&pn=B256143c569964f6e9a51562afdd1d588
When the process of recognition is completed, you will receive a certificate which confirms your attained qualifications are equal to those available in Austria. The board of education of Styria can, as part of the process, require you to undertake additional examinations.
NOSTRIFICATION OF TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS IN STATUTORY SCHOOLS:
Do you have a degree from a study program for statutory level education that is not from a member state of the European Union? Qualifications of this kind can be recognized by the University College of Teacher Education Styria (Nostrification) and thus considered as equal to Austrian qualifications. For nostrification, please contact the university directly (office@phst.at). For this process, it is necessary to attain a confirmation from the board of education of Styria that nostrification is necessary for employment.

Recognition of Qualifications for Federal School Teachers
ATTENTION: German language proficiency at the C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language Skills is a prerequisite for attaining a teaching position in federal schools.
Education attained within the European Economic Area (EEA) and in Switzerland can be recognized in Austria.
Jurisdiction:
For higher schools of general education (German abbreviation: AHS) and vocational schools (German abbreviation: BMHS), the recognition of qualifications falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry for Women, Science, and Research (German abbreviation: BMFWF).
For secondary agriculture and forestry schools, this falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Regions, and Tourism (German abbreviation: BMLRT). More information about this can be found at https://info.bmlrt.gv.at/im-fokus/bildung/hochschulen/anerkennung-der-lehramtsausbildung.html.
During the recognition process, the relevant body determines whether the attained certificates of education equate to those required in Austria to teach in either AHS or BMHS.
Request, Documentation:
The process of recognition of qualifications can be started via a request (www.aais.at). You can submit the request online at the following link: Online Formular BMB. This process can take up to four months.
In Austria, programs of study for teaching include the certification for two different school subjects, which is relatively rare in other countries. For this reason, you might be presented with the requirement to complete a supplementary course of studies for a second subject. In most cases, one of the requirements is also providing proof of a suitable level of proficiency in the areas of German language and/or Austrian school law.
For certificates of education attained outside of the EEA or Switzerland, the request for recognition of qualifications should be submitted to a university (nostrification of diplomas).
